The moment that the image of my father’s hand placing a small tomato plant in its pot started magically appearing on the 8×10 print floating in the tray – with that acrid smell of chemicals in the air – was the moment I was hooked on photography.
I learned the craft of photography in the darkroom. Back in the days of yore when film was the only way to make a photograph. However, during this time, digital cameras were becoming popular, and gave new access to a kid who couldn’t have a darkroom at home.
Photography became my raison d’etre. I started seeing the world through new eyes. Both the magnificent and mundane revealed beauty to me. Kind of like that kid from American Beauty who videotapes a plastic bag floating in the wind. I totally got that kid when no one else did.
Through encouragement to pursue photography professionally, I eventually broke into event and wedding photography. This offered challenges in ways I couldn’t begin to comprehend at the time.
Once those challenges were mastered, I was able to view weddings through yet a new set of eyes. Now I was picking up on the nuances and emotions throughout the wedding day. From the nervous, shaky handshake in the morning all the way to the pure elation at the end of the night.
The love, joy, relief, gratitude, and the sweaty hugs at the end of the night have me hooked. And I get paid for it. Not bad.
I’ve been in the photography business since 2012. I’m a sci-fi, fantasy, and music and book geek. I live for my friends, family, beach, and my frenchie Bruno who’s basically my number-one-best-favorite-animal.
